What is the IELTS Test?

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System which tests English proficiency across the globe.  It is designed to assess the language ability of people who would like to study, work, immigrate and integrate into an English-speaking environment.

IELTS is widely accepted by post-secondary schools(College, University, Career College) in Canada and is also recognized by CIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) as a proof of English Language proficiency for Immigration purpose.


IELTS Test Format

IELTS test is consist of four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.


Four sections, each section has ten questions
Testers need to listen to the recording and write down the answer


Three reading texts with a variety of question types
Testers need to read through the texts quickly and find the answers


Two Writing tasks. BOTH must be completed
+ For IELTS Academic, testers will need to demonstrate skills to describe visual information (such as a graph, chart or data sheet) in Task 1, and write an essay in Task 2.
+ For IELTS General, testers will be asked to write a letter in Task 1 and also write an essay in Task 2.


There are three sections in the one-on-one interview.
Tester are asked to answer a serious of questions, and have a short discussion with the examiner.The speaking test is recorded and the score is given based on the tester’s comprehension, word choices, grammar, pronunciation and fluency.
+ Part of the interview questions are spontaneous, meaning testers will need to answer right away.
+ Part of the questions will give the ester a limited time to prepare answers without writing down any notes. Examiners might ask for further information based on the testers’ answers, for instance, to clarify the answer by giving more examples

How long is the IELTS test?

In the official IELTS test, Listening, Reading and Writing modules are completed in the morning. These three sections last for three hours. There is no break during this time.

The Speaking section is usually held the afternoon of the test day between 1:20 and 5:20 p.m. However, speaking tests may be scheduled later. Every test taker spends 11–14 minutes in the speaking interview.
